We're down at the Barras Market, it's the 1950s, and we're in for a sweet treat, courtesy of this wee granny, who has been busy, at home, knocking up trays of tablet.

Glasgow, with its long links to the sugar trade (whisper it: slavery!), has always had a sweet tooth, to which the city's appalling dental health will testify.

This granny, who looks like she came straight from central casting, was only the latest to follow in a long-line of home sweetmakers.

Back in the 1800 and 1900s, Glasgow's streets used to be lined with 'sweetie wives' offering up their wares, and all the latest gossip, for the price of a bag of boilings.
